The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to check the goal on the screen and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

Everton remain in 14th position and are six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at each end of the field

After a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on target, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a major concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had scored only a single goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs penalty area.

The Toffees: The team travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: Spurs go to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against the Magpies.
