Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People purchasing these medications need to be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
People who have stopped the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become starving," described an individual.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
