Donald Trump’s most recent threat to impose an additional complete levy on items imported from China has been called a “typical example” of American hypocrisy, as stated by the Chinese government.

A Commerce Ministry spokesperson additionally remarked that Beijing could enact its own unrevealed “responsive actions” if the White House occupant executes his pledge, adding that the country was “not afraid” of a possible commercial battle.

This past Friday, the former president retaliated at the Chinese government’s action to tighten its regulations for overseas sales of rare earth minerals, charging the Chinese leadership of “turning aggressive” and attempting to hold the world “hostage”.

Additionally, he threatened to withdraw from a planned talks with China’s President President Xi, which was arranged for a meeting in South Korea before the month ends.

The former president’s remarks on that day rattled financial markets, with the S&P 500 share index closing down over two and a half percent, marking its largest decline since earlier this year.

These statements reignited fears of a trade war between the United States and China.

In May, the two sides had agreed to eliminate high import duties on each other’s imports, which had created the possibility of trade halting between the economic powers.

As a result, United States levies on Chinese goods subject to an additional 30% levy compared with the start of the year, while US goods entering the country face a import levy.

Beijing’s recent statements – issued by the Commerce Ministry in the manner of written responses to journalist’s questions – mirrored language from the height of the ongoing trade dispute.

Officials denounced American limits on exports on chips and semi-conductors while supporting China’s own overseas sale regulations on rare earth minerals as “routine measures” to ensure domestic safety and that of all nations.

The official stated that for “an extended period”, the United States had “broadened the definition” of national security, exploited foreign shipment regulations and “adopted unfair treatments against Beijing.

“Turning to” import duty warnings is not the right way to interact with China,” the official stated.

“The nation’s view” on a trade conflict has always been consistent: we wish to avoid one, but we are unafraid of one.”

Last week, China declared it was reinforcing export controls on rare earth minerals and other materials essential to advanced tech manufacturing.

This move was regarded as a important measure, as the nation refines about ninety percent of the planet’s critical minerals, which are employed in goods such as photovoltaic modules and smartphones.

New remarks from Washington and Beijing are being interpreted by observers as a method of enhancing bargaining power in preparation for upcoming negotiations.

Remains uncertain whether a talks between Trump and President Xi, scheduled at a conference in the Republic of Korea before month’s end, will take place as planned.
