Catherine's Traditional Christmas Musical Celebration Spotlights Community Volunteers

Her Royal Highness has organised her annual Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey, with a congregation comprising dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have supported their local areas.

The large audience will listen to a mix of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

A Theme of Kindness and Compassion

The theme of the service, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.

In the audience are Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose child passed away from a brain tumour, and who set up a charity, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an remarkable change to the lives of others," Her Royal Highness stated in a letter ahead of the festive gathering.

A Steady Comeback

The royal has been undertaking her own measured re-emergence to the public eye following her health challenges and treatment, recently giving her major oration since 2023, in which she reflected on recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Performance and Potential

Guests arriving at the Abbey will enjoy performances from talented youth performers backed by the Future Talent organisation, set up with the help of the late Duchess of Kent to widen access to music lessons.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who is a trumpet player and is from Pembrokeshire, has been assisted by the charity, with grants helping towards musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "amazing" to be taking part in the evening's event.

"Music can be very expensive," the musician remarked. She is now studying at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to cultivate their performance abilities.

A Family Affair

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who is a euphonium player, will be present at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many notable figures," she said.

Among the guests will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will encompass nine-year-old Saphia Turner, recipient of a youth community award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to raise money for food banks.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been festooned with custom-created holiday decorations, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

The musical lineup includes singer Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a nautical singing ensemble, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the perfect culmination."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be televised and shown on a major network on Christmas Eve.
