As Beachgoers Escaped Attack, Viral Image Captures Lifeguard Running ‘Full Speed’ Towards the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong local of Bondi, has always considered the famous shoreline as her personal space. On that particular weekend evening, she, similar to other neighbors, heard cracking sounds ringing out around the community.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was too light and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. She left her home, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces on display told her something was wrong.

As she stood on the road, talking to a pair who had run up the slope still dripping wet, she heard someone moving up at her rear. The person was a beach patrol officer, running at full speed to Bondi unshod from the nearby Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I just saw this flash of blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. He was the only one heading in the direction that the crowd was trying to escape from, carrying that sizeable pack and barefoot … He was sprinting towards something that undoubtedly every fibre in your being would signal you to move in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just totally pedal to the metal racing.”

An Iconic Image of Courage In the Wake of Tragedy

The image Ching captured of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous instances of courage in the following of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, says that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to support the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid surf lifesavers, officers and paramedics attending to dozens of those hurt.

Waverley council, the governing body that oversees many professional beach safety officers, stated that the staff performed exceptionally from the second the violence commenced right into late that night.

“We have heard so many moving narratives, but the popular picture of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help save lives is incredible,” stated a council representative.
