As per a new book, though, that honor belongs to the automated sawmill conceived through Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Prior to mechanised sawing, building a simple merchant vessel necessitated around 10 sawyers working for three months,” notes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-powered lumber mills, the same amount of processed timber could be manufactured in less than a week.”
Thanks to this speedy automated cutter, that turned timber to planks using virtually no manual labor, the Dutch could construct ships faster compared to anyone else, which sparked a century of Dutch naval, economic and artistic supremacy in the continent and the globe.
The First True Industrial Device
The inventor's lumber mill, argues the writer, was “mankind’s first true factory apparatus.” A windmill turned a gear. A single part converted its rotary motion into vertical action to power the cutting blade. Another component changed the rotary movement into a lateral motion advancing the log toward the cutter. A ratchet system moved the log forward one precise increment each cycle.
“Every component seemed modest by itself. Corneliszoon’s genius was to combine them in order that they operated within a perfectly controlled order, sawing with each descending stroke and advancing on every return motion. This constituted a remarkably intelligent application of fundamental components.”
